SEO vs GEO Gap

Keywords you win in Google but AI does not cite you

What are LLMs and why do they matter for your business?

LLM stands for Large Language Model. These are the artificial intelligence systems behind tools like ChatGPT, Google Gemini, Claude, and Perplexity. They work by processing enormous amounts of text to learn human language patterns, which enables them to answer questions, generate content, and hold natural conversations.

When a user asks ChatGPT "what's the best project management tool?" or asks Perplexity "which laptop should I buy for graphic design?", the LLM analyzes everything it learned from the web and selects the sources it considers most trustworthy to build its response. If your brand, product, or website doesn't have the right signals, the model simply won't include you in that answer, and your competition will take that spot.

Google AI Overviews is Google's version of this technology: instead of showing just a list of links, it now generates a direct AI-powered answer at the top of search results. This means the first result many users see is no longer a link to your site, but an AI-generated response that may or may not mention you.

In short: LLMs are the new intermediaries between your business and your potential customers. More and more people use these tools to research, compare, and decide what to buy. AuraMetrics helps you ensure that when AI answers questions about your industry, your brand is part of the answer.

What it does

SEO vs GEO Gap takes the keywords your domain ALREADY ranks for in Google and checks, keyword by keyword, whether AI cites you: Google position vs AI Overview citation vs generative-AI mention. It surfaces the keywords where you win in Google but AI ignores you: your clearest, most actionable GEO opportunity.

Why it matters

Ranking #1 in Google no longer guarantees AI recommends you: they're different systems. This module quantifies that gap with real data from both sides, the concrete case for justifying GEO work on content that already performs in traditional SEO.

How it works

The module starts from real data: the keywords your domain already ranks for on Google's first page. No Search Console needed, just your domain. It takes the highest-volume ones and, for each, runs two live checks. First, whether Google shows an AI answer box (AI Overview) for that search and whether it includes you. Second, whether generative AI assistants (ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity) cite your domain when they answer that same query. Then it cross-references both against your Google position: where you win in search but appear in neither AI layer, that keyword is flagged as a gap.

  1. 1Pull the keywords your domain already ranks for on Google (top 20), sorted by search volume.
  2. 2For the highest-volume ones, check live whether Google shows an AI Overview for that search and whether it mentions your domain.
  3. 3In parallel, check whether generative AI assistants cite your domain for that same search.
  4. 4Compare the two AI layers against your Google position. Where you rank high but AI doesn't cite you, there's a gap.

What each status means

AI Overview: YesGoogle shows an AI answer box for that search and cites you. You already have presence in that layer.
AI Overview: AIO without youGoogle generates an AI answer box for the search but leaves you out. Your competitors take that spot. This is the status to attack.
AI Overview: No AIOGoogle generates no AI Overview block for that search. The block does not exist for that term, so there is no presence to capture in this layer yet.
Generative AI: Yes / NoYour domain's presence in generative AI assistants' answers (ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity), measured independently from Google's AI Overview. This is why a keyword can have no AI Overview yet still be cited in this layer.
GAPYou rank top 10 in Google but neither the AI Overview nor generative AI cites you. Your clearest opportunity: the page already works in search, it just needs to become AI-citable.
Not measuredThe AI data for that keyword couldn't be retrieved on this run. It doesn't count as a gap: the module prefers not to claim rather than assume.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need Search Console connected?

No. Ranking keywords are pulled from your domain alone, with no account to connect.

Why does a keyword say No AIO on Google but Yes on generative AI?

Because they're two independent systems. No AIO means Google generates no AI Overview block for that search; generative AI (ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity) is measured separately and can still cite you. They're different surfaces with different behavior.

What counts as a gap?

A keyword where you rank top 10 in Google but neither the AI Overview nor generative AI cites you.
